How many active truckers are there?
There are over 3 million truck drivers in the U.S. alone. Of those 3 million, there are over 1 million long-haul truckers who own and operate their truck(s). In Canada there are in excess of 250,000 long-haul truckers. How big is the trucking industry? The U.S. trucking industry employs over 9 million Americans with over 3 million of these employees being "heavy-duty" truck drivers. Exact figures vary widely depending on the information source, or whether you measure revenues or tonnage.


How many trucking companies are there?
Over 360,000 companies in the U.S. are involved in interstate trucking. 82% of U.S. motor carriers operate 6 or fewer trucks; 96% operate 28 or fewer.

According to U.S. DOT:
  • Common carrier trucking companies generated $78 billion; a ten-fold increase since 1960.,
  • Private fleets generated $89 billion worth of revenue.
  • Combined, these two major segments of the trucking industry accounted for $167 billion in revenues and 2.8 million jobs.
  • 15.5 million commercial trucks operated, including 1.9 million combination units. In 1994, commercial trucks made up only 10.5% of all registered vehicles, yet paid $8.4 billion in Federal Highway Trust Fund taxes and $13 billion in state highway-user taxes. A combined total of $21.4 billion represents 44% of the total highway-user taxes paid by all motor vehicles.

How many truckers own computers?
It is estimated between 30 and 50% of the U.S. population owns at least one personal computer. Various surveys show that over 45% of truck drivers own PCs.

Doesn't driver fatigue cause a lot of accidents?
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, trucks are involved in only 4% of fatigue-related accidents. The trucking industry is doing a lot to address fatigue in con-junction with the Federal Government and Academic Researchers. Together they are working on improving driver and carrier education and experimenting with various countermeasures such as fitness-for-duty devices, vehicle motion monitors, adjusting driving schedules and fatigue monitors.
